The beekeepers plant the flowers that the bees love and place the hive in a habitat filled with wildflowers. Hence the flavor of this honey comes from the wildflowers growing naturally around the bee’s nest.

Zizira Honey is pure, natural, raw and unprocessed. It’s color & flavor depends directly on the source (wildflowers in this case) of the nectar. Zizira’s pure wildflower honey (multiflora honey) is made from sun-soaked pollen and nectar collected by bees in the summer months.

We know where your honey comes from

Let me tell you about Bah Peacemaker, a traditional beekeeper from Meghalaya, where we sourced our honey from.

Bah Peacemaker is a seasoned, traditional beekeeper from Thad village, in Meghalaya’s Ri Bhoi District.

He scouts for bee swarms in the jungles and when he finds one, he observes and follows it till he gets to where they congregate around their queen, usually in hollows of trees, in crevices between rocks. Bah Peacemaker then prepares a new ‘ksing’ – a traditional hive – to house the bees.

‘Ksing’ is usually cylindrical-shaped, hollowed out from tree trunks, two to three feet in length and ten to twelve inches in diameter. He checks for cracks or holes and seals them with fresh cow dung. These ‘ksing’ closely imitate the natural homes of bees, he says.

Once the new hive is ready he carefully collects the queen and puts her in the new ‘ksing’, tying her with a string so she can’t escape. The swarm naturally follows their queen to the new home. The worker bees now start building their combs or ‘lang’, beginning from the deep end and progressing towards the entrance.

The worker bees now start building their combs or ‘lang’, beginning from the deep end and progressing towards the entrance.

This ‘lang’ is the natural equivalent of a frame in a conventional man-made bee box and takes the cylindrical shape of the ‘ksing’. Depending on size, each ‘ksing’ can accommodate about ten to fifteen ‘lang’.

When a new queen hatches, Bah Peacemaker knows it’s time to splice the colony. He’d tie the old queen to a new hive a little away from the old one. Half the swarm follows the queen to the new colony.

Bah Peacemaker ensures he keeps sufficient stock of honey for the bees to survive lean and difficult seasons. Honey is the bees’ own food, he says, and a beekeeper mustn’t be greedy.

So, you see, Bah Peacemaker follows an ethical way to process honey.

Raw honey is not just tasty to eat, but it’s also a great medicine.

Activities That Happen in the Fields of Lakadong until It Reaches Your Home?

There is a lot of speculation about this and there’s no one reason. It could be the terrain, the high altitude, cool climate, abundant rain, the quality of the soil, the ancient variety of turmeric, and traditional farming methods.

These could be the influencing factors for its high curcumin 6 to 9% (last tested in 2019), which is one of the highest compared to other varieties of turmeric.
Curcumin is highly sought after due to its curative effects on many diseases.
Lakadong Turmeric originated from Lakadong Country, a 390 square km Laskein Community & Rural Development (C&RD) Block that sits on the central plateau region of West Jaintia Hills.

This region has characteristic rolling low hills and hillocks. The topography is plateau-like, with elevations varying from 600 to 1200m.
This is why we also called Lakadong turmeric a ‘high altitude turmeric’!

Here’s How Farmers Take Care of Planting Lakadong Turmeric

  • Sowing the Seeds 🌱: March-April showers🌧️ enable the farmers to prepare their land, clearing the weeds, bushes and other vegetation. They plough and beat the soil, make ridges and furrows and drop 2-3 seed rhizomes into the pits and then cover with soil.
  • Harvest Season of Lakadong Tumeric🌾: By December/January, the stems and leaves show signs of wilting. Farmers carefully dig into the earth with hoes to lift the clusters of rhizomes, tapping them to clear off mud and earth. Each rhizome cluster usually carries 8-12 finger rhizomes.
  • Preserving the Seeds: Lakadong turmeric farmers are choosy about preserving the best seed🌱. They sort and separate the roots for consumption and selling, while the seeds are selected from amongst the best of the lot for the next year’s turmeric production.

How Does Zizira Ensure High Quality Lakadong Turmeric?

Real Lakadong turmeric looks different. Being at the source and speaking the local language, we know the high value of Lakadong and the ease with which it can be adulterated and traders mixing Lakadong turmeric with other turmeric varieties.
So, we have eliminated every possibility of all that by sourcing it from the farmers themselves. It is like we farm it ourselves.

  • We select the best from the very people who grow them, who knows the difference between Lakadong turmeric and other varieties.
  • We take extra effort to partner with farmers from Jaintia Hills whose traditional farming practices emphasize on quality and responsibility.
  • We evaluate the land of our farmers to make sure it is free from pesticides, chemical fertilizers. These farmers use traditional methods of farming: cow dung, manure and vermicompost in their soil while cultivating Lakadong turmeric.
  • We follow our farmers through seasons and stages: planting, nurturing, harvesting, sorting and grading. We transport the rhizomes ourselves to our own and exclusive processing facility.

Processing the turmeric: Zizira takes care of processing the turmeric.
Our Processing Team wash🚿, dry🌞 and powder the turmeric and sent them to the accredited testing house to rule out the presence of any kind of hazards example heavy metals like lead, adulterants like Sudan and other chemical pesticides.
The turmeric is then packaged with utmost care and sent to all our customers.

The result? True and pure Lakadong. Nothing less.
